Since 1999, all Virginia Lottery profits have been used for K-12 public education in Virginia. In Fiscal Year 2020, the Virginia Lottery had sales of nearly $2.15 billion. Of this total, the Lottery generated more than $595 million, or 27.7% of sales, for K-12 public education; 61.3% of the total went back to players in the form of prizes; 5.6% went to the retailers who sell Virginia Lottery tickets; and 5.4% went to operational expenses.
