2021 Thank a Teacher Winners Announced

Teachers in New Kent and Yorktown take home top prize in Thank a Teacher program

In early June, we surprised two lucky teachers who won the top prize in our Thank a Teacher program. Both teachers won a Virginia vacation, courtesy of the Virginia Lottery, as well as a $5,000 credit for their schools from our partners at The Supply Room. The winners will choose between a health and wellness vacation and a brewery and winery vacation, and we’ll take care of the rest!

Our first winner, Shelly Hogge, is a career technical education teacher at New Kent Middle School in New Kent County. On Monday, June 7, we visited the school to surprise Ms. Hogge in her classroom with her students watching. First lady Pamela Northam and Deputy Secretary of Education Kathy Burcher joined Virginia Lottery Executive Director Kevin Hall for the big reveal.

Our second winner, Kelley Payne, is a sixth grade English teacher at Tabb Middle School in Yorktown. If the school’s name sounds familiar, it’s because this year’s middle school Thank a Teacher Art Contest winner is a student there! We surprised Ms. Payne on June 8 and were accompanied by Virginia Lottery Deputy Director Frank Wagner, Mrs. Northam, Ms. Burcher, Superintendent for Public Instruction Dr. James Lane and the Tabb Middle School Tiger. We caught Ms. Payne off guard as she and the entire sixth grade were eating lunch outside!

Watch the video below to see both surprise presentations. To enter to win, teachers submitted a unique code from each thank-you note they received from the public during National Teacher Appreciation Week in May. The drawing was held on May 19, 2021.
