Orange County woman wins $100,000 while waiting in the grocery store

Beverly CicioniBeverly Cicioni was waiting for her mother in the grocery store. Since the Locust Grove woman found herself standing next to the Virginia Lottery’s Lottery Express machine, she decided to buy a couple of tickets.

Later, at home she scratched the tickets and made what she thought was an exciting discovery.

“I thought I’d won $10,000,” she later said. “I was beyond elated!”

However, Ms. Cicioni had misread the ticket. Instead of winning $10,000, she’d actually won $100,000!

“I was moved to tears!” she said.

She won big in the Virginia Lottery’s $4,000,000 Spectacular Riches game. She bought the ticket at Wegmans, 2281 Carl D. Silver Parkway in Fredericksburg.

The $4,000,000 Spectacular Riches (Game #1738) Scratcher is one of dozens of games available from the Virginia Lottery. North Chesterfield woman wins $1 million at “lucky lottery spot”

Rachel BatesRachel Bates had a dream about winning – sort of.

“I had a dream about a purple ticket,” the North Chesterfield woman said.

Although that wasn’t much information to go on, her boyfriend David went on a search for that purple ticket.

“I went through about six or seven games until I found it,” he said.

He found the $52 Million Cash Spectacular ticket at Cannon Express Mart , 6110 Jahnke Road in Richmond. When he gave it to her, and she scratched the ticket, they realized she’d won the $1 million top prize.

“I was freaking out,” she said. “I was crying. The clerk brought me a bottle of water.”

Ms. Bates had the choice of taking the full $1 million prize over 30 years or a one-time cash option of $681,000 before taxes. She chose the cash option.

The store received a $10,000 bonus from the Lottery for selling the winning ticket.

“It’s my lucky lottery spot!” said David.

The $52 Million Cash Spectacular game features prizes ranging from $10 up to $1 million. As the name suggests, the game has a total of $52 million in prizes available. Ms. Bates is the fourth $1 million winner to claim, which means two top-prize tickets remain unclaimed. The odds of winning the top prize in this game are 1 in 1,224,000. Nevertheless, both Glenn and Pam went in to their respective jobs the next day, as if nothing had happened.

Virginia Beach couple wins $1 million playing Mega Millions
When Charles Leisure heard his wife Janet’s voice on the phone, he could tell something was up. She told him the Mega Millions ticket he’d bought for the December 27 drawing was worth a million dollars.

“I thought she might be joking until I heard her voice crack,” he said.

It was no joke. The ticket matched the first five numbers, missing only the Mega Ball number.

He bought the winning ticket at Wawa, 720 Woodlake Drive in Chesapeake, which is near where he works. He said he often goes there for lunch.

On January 5, the Virginia Beach couple returned to the store to receive the check from the Virginia Lottery. The store received a $10,000 bonus from the Lottery for selling the winning ticket.

The winning numbers were 2-28-30-38-39, and the Mega Ball number was 11. He used Easy Pick and allowed the computer to randomly select the numbers on the ticket. If it had matched all six numbers, the Leisures would have won a jackpot estimated at $85 million.

They said they have no immediate plans for their winnings except to pay bills.

Mega Millions drawings are held Tuesday and Friday nights at 11. Drawings are broadcast on TV stations across Virginia and streamed live at www.valottery.com. The odds of matching the first five numbers in Mega Millions are 1 in 18,492,204.
