For additional information see our Q & As below or read our press release.
- Q: What’s changing?
A: The only change is that Power Play is reverting back to a random multiplier (2x, 3x, 4x, or 5x). Previously, Power Play had fixed prizes you could win, but with the change, you will simply multiply the base prize by the random Power Play number chosen for that drawing (see chart above). Remember, Power Play does not affect the jackpot prize. If you match all of the first five numbers without the Powerball to win the second tier prize WITH Power Play, you automatically win $2,000,000, regardless of the Power Play number that is drawn.
- Q: When will these changes occur?
A: These changes will take effect on Sunday, January 19, 2014. The first drawing with the random Power Play multiplier will be Wednesday, January 22, 2014.
- Q: Why are you changing Powerball again?
A: You may have heard the saying, “Change is the only constant in life.” To keep our games new, fresh and appealing, we constantly evaluate feedback from players, assess the current lottery landscape and work to implement features we know are popular so that we can maximize the amount of money we’re able to contribute to Virginia’s K-12 public schools. We have found that players really like the idea of a random Power Play multiplier. A legal case was recently settled to allow lotteries to revert back to the popular multiplier feature, so the participating Powerball states could give players what they want!
- Q: Why can’t I add Power Play on my Powerball muti-draw/future play ticket?
A: Between December 12, 2013 and January 18, 2014, you won’t be able to advance purchase Power Play with your Powerball tickets. One important thing to note is that Powerball with Power Play tickets will still be sold for the current draw during this period.
Have no fear, though! Beginning January 19, 2014, you can again purchase Powerball multi-draw or future play tickets with Power Play. As always these tickets can be purchased for up to 26 draws.
Powerball multi-draw or future play tickets that do NOT include Power Play WILL continue to be sold for up to 26 draws in the future. They will not be affected by these changes.
- Q: Will the price of a ticket increase?
A: No, Powerball tickets still cost $2 each, and Power Play is an additional $1 per play.
- Q: When will drawings be held?
A: Drawings are still held Wednesdays and Saturdays at 11 p.m. No change there! Have additional questions? Please feel free to send us an email here.
