February 17, 2005
Picture this: you walk into a store to play a Virginia Lottery scratch game – and you walk out with $1,000 per week for the rest of your life. That is exactly what happened to Billy H. Richardson of Bluefield, West Virginia. He won the top prize in the Virginia Lottery’s Win For Life scratch game. Mr. Richardson purchased the ticket at Corner Mart, located at 2073 Leatherwood Lane in Bluefield, Virginia. On Friday, February 17, 2005, he returned to the store to receive his first check from Virginia Lottery Southwest Regional Manager Phil Hankey. He told Virginia Lottery officials that it was four or five days before he scratched the ticket and discovered it was a top prize winner. “I’ve finally hit it!” he said he told his wife. “She started crying.” Mr. Richardson is a retired construction specialist. He said he recently had major surgery, and the prize will come in handy to pay bills.
This is the second time within seven months that a Win For Life top-prize ticket has appeared in Tazewell County. In July, Donna Miner of Cedar Bluff won $1,000 per week for life with a ticket she purchased at Kents Ridge Grocery in Richlands. Because of the popularity of the Win For Life scratch game, the Virginia Lottery renewed the game with an additional three top prize tickets. Mr. Richardson is the tenth player to win $1,000 per week for life, which means there is still one top prize ticket out there somewhere, waiting to be bought and scratched. All Virginia Lottery profits go to K-12 public school education. In fiscal year 2004, the Lottery turned over more than $408 million for education.
