When Judy Hartsook’s husband told her she won $52,000 in the Win For Life game, she had a one-word reply: “Nah!”
But it was true. The Staunton woman matched five numbers plus the Free Ball number in the April 7 Win For Life drawing to win the game’s second prize.
“It will be quite a while before it sinks in,” she said as she claimed her prize at the Lottery’s Shenandoah Valley Customer Service Center in Harrisonburg.
Her husband bought the ticket at Royal, 1915 West Beverly Street in Staunton. The winning numbers for that drawing were 9-20-25-29-32-39 and the Free Ball was 19.
Ms. Hartsook said she intends to use her winnings to pay bills.
Win For Life offers a top prize of $1,000 per week for the life of the winner. Drawings are held Wednesday and Saturday nights at 11:00. Nearly 95 cents of each dollar spent on the Virginia Lottery by players goes back to the Commonwealth in the form of contributions to education, prizes and retailer commissions. Since 1999, all Virginia Lottery profits have been designated solely to K-12 public school education in the Commonwealth. In that time, the Lottery has turned over more than $4 billion for Virginia’s public schools. The latest annual profits of $439.1 million currently represent about 7 percent of state funding for public education in Virginia. In 21 years, the Lottery has sold more than $21.1 billion in tickets, awarded more than $1.1 billion in retailer commissions and paid more than $11.6 billion in prizes to players.
