Shimmering Ticket Puts a Sparkle in the Eyes of a West Augusta Man

September 17, 2009

Warren Kincaid of West Augusta wanted to buy a Molten Money Scratcher ticket. At the last minute, the sparkle of all the diamonds on the Dollars & Diamonds ticket caught his attention instead. Now, Kincaid has a sparkle in his eye…worth $150,000.

“I don’t know why I changed my mind,” said Kincaid about his last-minute decision to purchase a different ticket. “I do know that I always felt like I could win!”

Kincaid bought his ticket at Savex located at 2309 West Beverley Street in Staunton. He scratched the ticket right away, but had to look at it a few times before believing he’d just won the top prize.

“The first thing I did was sign the ticket, put it in the pocket of a pair of jeans and stuck it in a drawer,” said Kincaid. “Now I’m looking forward to paying off some of my bills and some of my girlfriend’s bills.”

Dollars & Diamonds is one of dozens of Scratcher games from the Virginia Lottery. Kincaid is the second player to claim the game’s top prize, which means two top-prize tickets have not yet been claimed.

Nearly 95 cents of each dollar spent on the Virginia Lottery by players goes back to the Commonwealth in the form of contributions to education, prizes and retailer commissions. Since 1999, all Virginia Lottery profits have been designated solely to K-12 public school education in the Commonwealth. In that time, the Lottery has turned over more than $4 billion for Virginia’s public schools. The latest annual profits of $455 million currently represent about 6 percent of state funding for public education in Virginia. In 20 years, the Lottery has sold more than $20 billion in tickets, awarded more than $1 billion in retailer commissions and paid more than $10.9 billion in prizes to players.
