Petersburg Man Wins $250,000 With Three Tickets In The Same Cash 5 Drawing

November 8, 2005

Raymond Bailey of Petersburg will long remember Halloween 2005. That is the day the retired postmaster won a big treat: $250,000 from the Virginia Lottery.

Mr. Bailey matched the five winning numbers on three separate Cash 5 tickets for the October 31 night drawing. The winning numbers were 3-9-10-13-18. He wagered $1 on each of two tickets, so both of them won $100,000. On the third ticket he wagered $.50, so it won $50,000.

“It’s a pleasant surprise,” he said, in a masterpiece of understatement.

He purchased all three winning tickets at Qwik Stop at 715 East Washington Street in Petersburg. He chose his five numbers using some numbers he had seen a few days before.

“They appeared to be potential winning numbers,” he later told Lottery officials.

Mr. Bailey says the winnings will come in handy for his retirement.

Cash 5 drawings are held twice a day, Monday through Saturday at 1:59 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. The odds of winning the $100,000 top prize are 1 in 278,256.

All Virginia Lottery profits go to K-12 public school education in the Commonwealth. In fiscal year 2005, the Lottery turned over more than $423 million for education.
