Sisters From North Carolina Split $250,000 Mega Millions Prize

November 4, 2005

Shirley Long of Pleasant Garden, North Carolina and Gayle Cox of Climax, North Carolina had an unspoken agreement when they played the lottery.

“We always played with the understanding that if one of us won, it would be a joint win,” Ms. Cox said.

And that is exactly what happened! Their ticket won $250,000 in the October 25, 2005 Mega Millions drawing. It was the only ticket purchased in Virginia to win the new second highest prize in the popular jackpot game. They won the prize by matching the first five numbers and only missing the Mega Ball number.

“I saw the winning numbers in the newspaper and I got very excited,” Ms. Cox later told Virginia Lottery officials. “I told her we won $250,000 and she said ‘how?’”

The winning ticket was purchased at Big Al’s, located at 2980 West Main Street in Danville. On Thursday, November 3, they returned to the store to receive their checks from Virginia Lottery Interim Executive Director Donna M. VanCleave.

The winning numbers were 06-12-18-31-55 and the Mega Ball was 30. They used the “Easy Pick” function, in which the computer randomly selects six numbers.

Mega Millions is played in 12 states: California, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Texas, Virginia and Washington. Mega Millions drawings are held every Tuesday and Friday at 11:00 p. m. Eastern Time. For more information visit www.valottery.com or www.megamillions.com.

All profits from the Virginia Lottery, including Mega Millions tickets sold in Virginia, go to K-12 public school education in the Commonwealth. In fiscal year 2005, the Lottery turned over more than $423 million for Virginia’s public schools.
