March 25, 2005
Cheyenne Jones of High Point, N.C. recently purchased some Mega Millions tickets in Danville. He asked for five “Easy Picks” on one ticket. Instead, the retail clerk gave him five separate tickets. Regardless of how the tickets were displayed, one of those single “Easy Pick” tickets won Mega Millions’ second highest prize of $175,000! Mr. Jones matched the first five numbers in the March 22, 2005 Mega Millions drawing. The winning numbers for that drawing were 06-11-27-37-43 and the Mega Ball number 34. He purchased the winning ticket at Fas Mart, located at 2802 West Main Street in Danville. Mr. Jones thought he had a winning ticket but he called the Virginia Lottery’s Player Information Line to make sure. He was finally convinced when he saw the numbers flash across his television screen well after midnight. “I grabbed my chest and sat down and thought about it. Then I went on to bed so I wouldn’t have a heart attack,” he said jokingly. Mr. Jones said he plans to use his winnings to pay off bills and bank the rest. Mega Millions is currently played in 11 states: Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Texas, Virginia and Washington. Officials in California have announced plans to join the fun later this year. Mega Millions drawings are held every Tuesday and Friday at 11:00 p. m. Eastern Time. All profits from the Virginia Lottery, including Mega Millions tickets sold in Virginia, go to K-12 public school education in the Commonwealth. In fiscal year 2004 the Lottery turned over more than $408 million for Virginia’s public schools.
