The Virginia Lottery's Win For Life game has really been paying off lately. In two weeks, two Virginia Lottery subscribers have won the top prize of $1,000 per week for life.
James Jenkins of Alexandria is the latest to claim that lifetime prize. Mr. Jenkins has a Virginia Lottery Win For Life subscription, which means he purchased his ticket directly from the Lottery for multiple drawings. His ticket won the top prize in the June 10 drawing.
"I was hoping it would happen," he told Lottery officials. "I kept my fingers crossed, but I never thought it would happen."
On June 17, Mr. Jenkins went to the Lottery's Northern Virginia Customer Service Center in Woodbridge, where Executive Director Paula Otto handed him the first in a lifetime of checks.
The winning numbers for the June 10 drawing were 3-6-7-10-19-42 and the Free Ball number was 26. He won by matching the first six of those numbers. Mr. Jenkins selected numbers that he has used since he became one of the very first Virginia Lottery subscribers in 1992.
Subscriptions are offered by the Virginia Lottery for Win For Life and Mega Millions to give players the opportunity to purchase tickets through the mail via the Lottery's Web site www.valottery.com. Just two weeks earlier, Holly Alfano of Vienna won the top prize in Win For Life, also with a Virginia Lottery subscription.
Mr. Jenkins, who is a retired public safety officer, hopes to use his winnings to donate to causes close to his heart.
Win For Life offers a top prize of $1,000 per week for the life of the winner. Other prizes range from $2 to $52,000. Drawings are held Wednesday and Saturday nights at 11:00. Mr. Jenkins is the 25th player in Virginia to win the top prize in Win For Life, and the third subscriber.
Nearly 95 cents of each dollar spent on the Virginia Lottery by players goes back to the Commonwealth in the form of contributions to education, prizes and retailer commissions. Since 1999, all Virginia Lottery profits have been designated solely to K-12 public school education in the Commonwealth. In that time, the Lottery has turned over more than $4 billion for Virginia's public schools. The latest annual profits of $455 million currently represent about 6 percent of state funding for public education in Virginia. In 20 years, the Lottery has sold more than $20 billion in tickets, awarded more than $1 billion in retailer commissions and paid more than $10.9 billion in prizes to players.
Please play responsibly.
