 What do an allergy shot and a million-dollar lottery ticket have in common? Larry Meador got them on the same day.
The Richmond man was on his way to get the shot when he stopped for a soda at the 7-Eleven at 1300 East Nine Mile Road in Highland Springs. While he was there,he bought a Virginia’s New Year’s Millionaire Raffle ticket from the Virginia Lottery.
His ticket was #235060. On January 2,the day after the raffle drawing,his wife Gayle called with an unusual question.
“Is this a real ticket?” she asked.
When he confirmed that it was indeed real,she replied,“You won!”
On January 10,the couple returned to the store to receive their check from Virginia Lottery Executive Director Paula Otto. The store received a $10,000 bonus for selling the $1 million ticket.

The Meadors’ ticket was one of four million-dollar winners in Virginia’s New Year’s Millionaire Raffle. The other three were bought in Springfield,Midlothian and Broadway. Four tickets won $50,000 each. Those tickets were bought in Chester,Hampton,Dayton and Glenns. An additional 400 tickets each won $500.

 There are some amazing teachers out there. “Super Teachers,” in fact,and many of them are right here in Virginia. Bethany Schaefer is one of those teachers and that’s why she was selected to receive the 2013 Virginia Lottery Super Teacher award.
Bethany Schaefer was awarded today in a surprise presentation at Pulaski County High School in front of students,faculty and special guests. The award,sponsored by the Virginia Lottery,the Virginia PTA and Virginia-based The Supply Room Companies,consists of a $2,000 cash prize and an additional $2,000 classroom credit from The Supply Room Companies.
Later this fall,each of the eight schools where a winning teacher was honored will participate in a Facebook contest in which the public will vote for one of those schools to receive $5,000 in classroom supplies from The Supply Room Companies.
This is the sixth year for the Virginia Lottery Super Teacher awards. Each year,the Lottery asks for nominations from all across the state and,this year,nearly 800 nominations were received. Eight teachers are selected – one from each of eight geographic regions across the state – to win. Bethany Schaefer is the eighth,and final,public school teacher to receive the Super Teacher Award for 2013.
“She incorporates activities that involve students practically applying their English lessons,” said friend and nominator,Harvey James. “For example,when studying Shakespeare,students create cards with unusual Shakespearean compliments and give them to family members. A mother who is told she is a "rare honey-tongued true-penny’ would be delighted to find out that she is a unique,sweet-speaking,honorable woman. Thus,students can express their emotions,showcase their knowledge,and uplift a family member through this activity.”
The 2013 Virginia Lottery Super Teachers were selected by a panel of distinguished educators and community leaders,including:

* Dr. Martha Ross,professor emerita,JMU
* The Honorable James W. Dyke,former Virginia Secretary of Education
* Anne Carson,President of the Virginia PTA

The judges selected the eight winners based on the strength of the nominations and educators’ qualities as exemplified by the nominator. Each nomination included answers to four questions addressing everything from the teacher’s passion for and commitment to the profession,to innovation and creativity in the classroom,to how they involve the parents of their students.
“These awards are a great way for the Lottery to demonstrate that ‘We’re Game for education,”” said Virginia Lottery Executive Director Paula Otto. “We are committed to supporting Virginia’s public schools,and that includes recognizing outstanding Super Teachers like Bethany Schaefer who are making such a difference in the education of Virginia’s youth and,indeed,our future leaders.”

 Not many people can say they won $150,000 before their morning coffee. Sede Norton of Poquoson started his day off with a winning Virginia Lottery Scratcher ticket.
“I’m trying not to have a heart attack,” he told Lottery officials.
Once he realized he had won,he returned to the store where he purchased the ticket with good news. He won the $150,000 top prize in the Cash in Hand Scratcher game.
He bought the winning ticket at Sheffield’s Grocery,1155 Poquoson Avenue in Poquoson.
Cash in Hand is one of dozens of Scratcher games available from the Virginia Lottery. It features prizes ranging from $5 all the way to the top prize of $150,000. Mr. Norton is the eighth winner,which means two top prizes remain unclaimed.
Mr. Norton,a retiree,told Lottery officials he plans to save the money.

 Jazlyn Leak of Yorktown scratched her Virginia Lottery ticket and “BAM there it was!” She revealed the top prize of $1,000,000 in $70 Million Payout Spectacular. Next,she jumped up and down.
She bought the winning ticket at Kroger,101 Village Avenue in Yorktown.
She had a choice of taking the full $1 million over 25 years or a one-time cash option of $642,000 before taxes. She chose the cash option. The store received a $10,000 bonus from the Lottery for selling the winning ticket.
Ms. Leak,a student at Thomas Nelson Community College,told Lottery officials she has no immediate plans for the money.
$70 Million Payout Spectacular is one of dozens of Scratcher games available from the Virginia Lottery. It features prizes ranging from $10 all the way to $1,000,000. Ms. Leak is the seventh $1,000,000 winner in this game,which means just one top prize remains unclaimed.

 Tony Citarelli’s father liked to play the Lottery. The Colonial Heights man said his father had some favorite numbers that he saw in a dream. When Tony played those numbers in the Virginia Lottery’s May 8 Cash 5 day drawing,he won $100,000.
“I thought maybe I had it wrong,” he told Virginia Lottery officials as he claimed the prize.
Tony matched all five numbers with a ticket he bought at the 7-Eleven at 3301 Oaklawn Blvd. in Hopewell. Those winning numbers were 3-9-11-21-31.
Cash 5 drawings are held daily at 1:59 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. The chances of winning the $100,000 top prize are 1 in 278,256.

 There are some amazing teachers out there. “Super Teachers,” in fact,and many of them are right here in Virginia. Matthew Miller is one of those teachers and that’s why he was selected to receive the 2013 Virginia Lottery Super Teacher award.
Matthew Miller was awarded today in a surprise presentation at Garden City Elementary School in front of students,faculty and special guests. The award,sponsored by the Virginia Lottery,the Virginia PTA and Virginia-based The Supply Room Companies,consists of a $2,000 cash prize and an additional $2,000 classroom credit from The Supply Room Companies.
Later this fall,each of the eight schools where a winning teacher was honored will participate in a Facebook contest in which the public will vote for one of those schools to receive $5,000 in classroom supplies from The Supply Room Companies.
This is the sixth year for the Virginia Lottery Super Teacher awards. Each year,the Lottery asks for nominations from all across the state and,this year,nearly 800 nominations were received. Eight teachers are selected – one from each of eight geographic regions across the state – to win. Matthew Miller is the seventh public school teacher to receive the Super Teacher Award for 2013. One more surprise presentations will occur this spring.
“His specific class constantly requires improvisation and a teacher cannot improvise without strong creativity,” said friend and nominator,Shauna-Maria Andolina. “Physical movement around the classroom is comfortable by his creative design and arrangement. He creates an entertaining,safe and productive environment on field trips and with the classroom he was provided. The shades hung on the ceiling are creative to help children specifically with Autism. His knowledge of Autism helped influence his creative habits to enrich students’ learning experience.”

 Betty Cambron used to drive around in an old car with 200,000 miles on it. No more! The Chesapeake woman played the Virginia Lottery’s Jeep® Scratcher game and won a new set of wheels!
She bought the winning ticket at Wilco Food Mart,3260 Western Branch Blvd. in Chesapeake,while she was on her lunch break.
“My heart started fluttering,” she later told Lottery officials.
On May 17,she received the keys to her 2013 Jeep® Wrangler Rubicon Vehicle from Virginia Lottery Hampton Roads Customer Service Center Manager Keary Fox.

 When Lloyd Atkinson realized he’d won the $100,000 top prize in the Virginia Lottery’s Cash 5 game he had just one thing to say:
“You’ve got to be kidding me!”
The Richmond man matched all five numbers in the May 9 Cash 5 day drawing. He bought his winning ticket at the 7-Eleven at 2111 Hilliard Road in Richmond.

Although the jackpot-winning ticket in the record-setting May 18 Powerball drawing was not bought in Virginia,the Commonwealth benefitted from the excitement. During the jackpot run that began after the March 30 drawing and continued until Saturday’s drawing,sales of Powerball tickets in Virginia generated an estimated $13 million in profit. By law,all of that profit goes to K-12 public schools in the Commonwealth.
More than 210,000 Powerball tickets bought in Virginia won prizes in last night"s drawing,ranging from $4 to a ticket that won $1 million. That million-dollar ticket was bought at Food Lion,7760 Gunston Plaza in Lorton. An additional 11 tickets in Virginia each won $10,000.

While the nation’s eyes were focused on Saturday’s Powerball drawing,two tickets matched all six numbers in Friday’s Mega Millions drawing. Those tickets,which were bought in Virginia and New Jersey,will now split the estimated $198 million jackpot ($99 million each). The Virginia ticket was bought at Food Lion,1592 South Main Street in Farmville.
The winning numbers were 11-15-35-43-49 and the Mega Ball number 41.
The Virginia winner has 180 days from the drawing to claim the prize. That person or persons will have a choice:Either take the full $99 million in 26 annual payments or a one-time cash option of approximately $73.3 million before taxes.
This is Virginia’s 8th Mega Millions jackpot win. In addition,Virginia had its first Powerball jackpot win in February,when Dave and Nancy Honeywell of Fredericksburg claimed a $217 million jackpot.

As Virginians line up for a piece of the action with an estimated $600 million Powerball jackpot,someone in Virginia may have a ticket worth $1 million from last night’s Powerball drawing.
More than 64,000 tickets in Virginia won prizes ranging from $4 to $1 million in the Wednesday,May 15 drawing. The $1 million-winning ticket was bought at Wilco Food Mart,204 Roanoke Street in Christiansburg. The winner has not yet claimed his or her prize.
Two Virginia tickets each won $10,000 in Wednesday’s drawing. Those tickets were bought in Alexandria and Manassas.
Virginia Lottery officials expect to sell more than 4.7 million Powerball tickets in the Commonwealth on Saturday alone. If one ticket matches all six numbers in Saturday’s drawing,the winner will have a choice:either take the full $600 million jackpot in 30 annual payments or choose a one-time cash option of approximately $350.1 million before taxes.
Paula Otto,Executive Director of the Virginia Lottery,urges those in the Commonwealth to play responsibly. "Saturday"s Powerball drawing is an exciting time for players across the state.  Melvyn Wilson might be running out of room for all the big Virginia Lottery ceremonial checks he’s received. Back in 2005,he won prizes of $1 million and $500,000 in Virginia Lottery Scratcher games. In 2004 he won a $25,000 prize.
Now the Woodbridge man has done it again!
He scratched to win $500,000 in the Virginia Lottery’s Millionaire Mania game.He bought the winning ticket at Handy Dandy Market,13316 Occoquan Road in Woodbridge.
“I’m just in the right place at the right time,” is how he explains his amazing lottery luck.
The store received a $10,000 bonus from the Lottery for selling the winning ticket.
In Millionaire Mania,$500,000 is actually the second prize. The game’s top prize is $2 million. Mr. Wilson is the game’s third $500,000 winner,which means three half-million-dollar tickets remain unclaimed. Two $2 million tickets remain unclaimed.
Mr. Wilson retired from the postal service in 2007. What does he do with all those winnings?

 Rosario Ando of Virginia Beach has a new set of wheels. She played the Jeep® Scratcher game from the Virginia Lottery and became the first player to win a Jeep®.
She bought the winning ticket at E & C Va,2401 Lynnhaven Parkway in Virginia Beach.
On May 10,she received the keys to her new vehicle from Virginia Lottery Hampton Roads Customer Service Center Manager Keary Fox. Ms. Ando said she intends to give the vehicle to her grandson.
“I feel happy,very,very happy,” she said.

John Bennett was awarded today in a surprise presentation at Mary Munford Elementary School in front of students,faculty and special guests. The award,sponsored by the Virginia Lottery,the Virginia PTA and Virginia-based The Supply Room Companies,consists of a $2,000 cash prize and an additional $2,000 classroom credit from The Supply Room Companies.
Later this fall,each of the eight schools where a winning teacher was honored will participate in a Facebook contest in which the public will vote for one of those schools to receive $5,000 in classroom supplies from The Supply Room Companies.
This is the sixth year for the Virginia Lottery Super Teacher awards. Each year,the Lottery asks for nominations from all across the state and,this year,nearly 800 nominations were received. Eight teachers are selected – one from each of eight geographic regions across the state – to win. John Bennett is the fifth public school teacher to receive the Super Teacher Award for 2013. Three more surprise presentations will occur this spring.
“There are guitars on one wall,hand tools on another,and learning prompts throughout. To teach grammar,he constructs silly/fun stories about the students,which include their unique personalities,interests,and strengths,” said nominator,Andrew Sharp,a parent of one of Mr. Bennett’s students. “He uses group work & student projects extensively,encouraging students to creatively dialogue with each other and play an active role in shaping the assignment itself. In this way he demonstrates to them that he trusts their ability to take charge of their own education and to work in constructive ways with others.”

 Here’s a movie with a happy ending:Corden Bohannon of Midlothian bought a Virginia Lottery ticket while on his way to the theater,and the ticket won $1 million!
It happened back in December when he stopped at Wawa,150 Pike View Drive in Midlothian. While there getting something to eat,he bought a Virginia’s New Year’s Millionaire Raffle ticket from the Virginia Lottery.
“I remember looking in my wallet and saying,‘Well,I’ve got 20 bucks,why not play?’” he told Lottery officials.
The ticket was #185154. On January 1,it was one of four million-dollar winning tickets drawn.
“I was sitting in my room and I checked the winning numbers,” Bohannon recalled. “I just kept reading it and reading it. I couldn’t believe it.”
On May 10,he returned to the store to receive the big check from Virginia Lottery officials. Wawa received a $10,000 bonus for selling the $1 million ticket.

Bohannon’s ticket was one of four million-dollar winners in Virginia’s New Year’s Millionaire Raffle. The other three were bought in Springfield,Highland Springs and Broadway. Four tickets won $50,000 each. Those tickets were bought in Chester,Hampton,Dayton and Glenns. An additional 400 tickets each won $500.

 Imagine receiving $1,000 per week for the rest of your life. Thomas Taylor of Meadowview doesn’t need to imagine - it happened. He won the top prize in the Virginia Lottery’s Win for Life game.
Mr. Taylor matched the first six numbers in the April 27 Win for Life drawing. He bought the winning ticket at Brown’s Pantry,27244 Lee Highway in Abingdon.
“I was surprised,” the retiree told Virginia Lottery officials.
The winning numbers for that drawing were 5-9-15-28-33-39 and the Free Ball number was 36.
Mr. Taylor is Virginia’s 41st lifetime winner since Win for Life began in February 2006. Win for Life drawings are held Wednesday and Saturday nights at 11:00. The chances of winning the top prize are 1 in 5,245,786. Other prizes in the game range from $2 to $52,000.

 As Reginald Hicks scratched his Virginia Lottery ticket and realized it was a winner,he thought it might be worth $5. But as he continued scratching,he saw something he’d never seen before.
“What’s with all the zeros?” he wondered.
That’s when he realized he’d won a lot more than he first thought. He won the $150,000 top prize in the More Folding Money Scratcher game.
He bought the winning ticket at Belt Boulevard BP,1 West Belt Boulevard in Richmond.
More Folding Money is one of dozens of Scratcher games available from the Virginia Lottery. It features prizes ranging from $5 all the way to $150,000.Mr. Hicks is the second $150,000 winner in this game,which means five top prizes are unclaimed.

 William Ozark of Gainesville said he’d never won more than $100 in the Lottery before.On Sunday,April 28th,his luck changed and he won a great deal more.
He won the $250,000 top prize in the Virginia Lottery’s Big Winning Numbers game. He bought the ticket at BJ’s Wholesale Club at 5100 Wellington Road in Gainesville.
Mr. Ozark,an employee at the Department of Defense,said he plans to talk with a financial advisor.
“I was pretty shocked,” he told Lottery officials.

 Pamela Clifton of Glen Allen matched the first five numbers in the April 26 Mega Millions drawing to win $250,000.
She bought her ticket at the Wawa at 8851 Staples Mill Road in Richmond.
The winning numbers for that drawing were 17-42-49-54-55,Mega Ball 31. She used Easy Pick and let the computer select her numbers at random.
Ms. Clifton’s ticket was one of six tickets nationwide to match the first five numbers in that drawing,and the only one in Virginia. Had she matched that final number,the Mega Ball number,she would have won a jackpot estimated at $103 million.

“Ms. Ross allows students to apply what they have learned about the political process and serve the community through her “Kids for Kicks” assignment,” said nominator and assistant principal Cassandra Crawford. “Students conduct a shoe drive and fundraiser to support needy students at two local elementary schools. Students write press releases,use twitter and other media to spread the word;they create a lesson plan based on second grade civic standards,and then teach it at the elementary schools. Students also reach out to government officials at the various levels,and build relationships with local businesses. Last year more than 350 pairs of shoes and $2,500 were collected.”

 Zohra Haideri is a very lucky person. The Reston woman matched the first five numbers in the April 5 Mega Millions drawing to win $250,000.
She bought the ticket at the 7-Eleven at 8498 Euclid Avenue in Manassas Park.
The winning numbers for that drawing were 8-15-23-36-41,Mega Ball 5. She used Easy Pick and let the computer select her numbers at random.

 Brien Miller of Stafford could hardly believe his eyes,or his computer. In fact,he shut it down several times before he could believe he had the one million dollar Powerball ticket being shown on the Powerball website.
He waited until his wife got home to tell her the good news. He told her as she was pulling into the garage. She shared his doubt and said,“no way!”

 Belinda Turman thought she had a winning Powerball ticket. She thought she might have matched some of the numbers. But the Timberville woman didn’t know how much she’d won until she checked the winning numbers and discovered she’d won a cool $2 million.
“I’m in shock,excited,” she later said.
Ms. Turman matched the first five numbers in the April 17 Powerball drawing. Normally that would win $1 million. But Ms. Thurman spent an extra dollar for Power Play when she bought her ticket. Power Play increased the prize to $2 million.
She bought the ticket at Food Lion,14054 Timber Way in Timberville. On April 25,she returned to the store to receive her prize from the Virginia Lottery. The store received a $10,000 bonus from the Lottery for selling the winning ticket.

 Imagine receiving $1,000 per week for the rest of your life. Ahmed Rahman of Virginia Beach doesn’t need to imagine - it happened. He won the top prize in the Virginia Lottery’s Win for Life game.
Dr. Rahman matched the first six numbers in the April 20 Win for Life drawing. Instead of buying his ticket from a store,he won with a Win for Life subscription. “I got out of the car and screamed,” he later said.

 Randy Johnson is not the kind of person to make a fuss. So when the Chesterfield man discovered he’d won $125,000 in the Virginia Lottery’s Pick 4 game,he smiled and quietly walked out of the store.
“It felt good to have the ticket in my hand,” he later told Lottery officials.

 Melissa Parrish of Richmond doesn’t usually play Win for Life.So when she saw what seemed to be a winning ticket,she was bit skeptical.
“I don’t know if this is real,” she said.

 Tina Moultrie of Alexandria first heard about the Virginia Lottery’s Millionaire Mania Scratcher game when a family friend won the game’s $500,000 second prize in early April. Ms. Moultrie decided to try her luck at the same game.

 It was a spur-of-the-moment purchase. James Carbonneau of Poquoson decided to play the Virginia Lottery’s 10X the Money Scratcher game when he stopped for gas at Uppy’s,7305 George Washington Highway in Yorktown.
He took the ticket out to his car and scratched it. That’s when he discovered he’d won the game’s $100,000 top prize.
Mr. Carbonneau claimed the fifth and final top prize in 10X the Money (game #1355),which means the game is closed. It is the Virginia Lottery’s policy to close Scratcher games as soon as the final top prize is claimed.

"You"ve won the lottery!" It"s something that many people want to hear. But sometimes those words come from scammers who are trying to steal your money. Recently,some of those scammers have falsely identified themselves as being with the Virginia Lottery.
"These criminals use a lot of tricks to create the appearance of a legitimate lottery," said Virginia Lottery Spokesperson John Hagerty. "We believe we are seeing an increase in attempts to scam people."
The scams often target older people and have been known to wipe out victims’ retirement savings.
”AARP encourages its members and all older Virginians to be on the lookout for signs of consumer fraud to protect themselves,as well as their friends and family,” said AARP Virginia State Director Bill Kallio.AARP offers tips on avoiding scams and fraud at http://www.aarp.org/money/scams-fraud/.
The scams take many forms. In most cases the criminals e-mail or call to tell intended victims they have won a large prize. They might identify themselves as being with the Virginia Lottery or with Mega Millions,even though Mega Millions is a game,not an organization. Some scammers have lifted photos and language from the Virginia Lottery"s website to make themselves look legitimate.
These scams all have one thing in common:They try to trick you into sending them money or personal information by claiming that you have won a large lottery prize.
"It can be an effective lure to tell someone they have won a large prize when in fact that is not the case," said Hagerty. "If someone tries to tell you you"ve won a lottery that you never played,it’s most likely a scam."
If the person is fooled into thinking he or she has won a prize,the crooks usually try to get the person to wire money for "taxes" or "fees." They may also try to get the victim to provide them with a bank account number,which they will then clean out. Another trick is to send the winner a bogus "check" and ask the winner to send money back to cover expenses. It is only after victims have sent their own money that they discover the check they received is counterfeit.
There are some occasions,usually involving unusual prizes,when a Virginia Lottery representative will call players to inform them they won. If you have a Mega Millions or Win for Life subscription through the Virginia Lottery,or you win a second chance drawing or sweepstakes,a Lottery representative will call if you win a large prize. However,for the vast majority of Virginia Lottery prizes,Lottery officials do not call winners. Except for subscribers,no one at the Lottery knows who has won a prize until the ticket is presented for validation.
Here are some tips that can prevent you from being scammed:
* If someone says you have won a lottery that you have never played,be suspicious. You can"t win a legitimate lottery if you didn"t buy a ticket.
* If you have caller-ID on your phone,check the area code when someone calls to tell you you"ve won. If it is from a foreign country,that is a red flag. Also,be aware that some con artists use technology that allows them to disguise their area code:although it may look like they"re calling from Virginia,they could be anywhere in the world.
* Be suspicious if an e-mail contains misspellings or poor grammar,or if the person who called you uses poor English.
* If you are told that you need to keep your "win" confidential,be suspicious.
* No real lottery tells winners to put up their own money in order to collect a prize they have already won. If you have to pay a fee to collect your winnings,you haven’t won.
* Just because a real lottery is mentioned does not necessarily make it a real prize. Someone may be using the lottery"s name without its permission or knowledge.
* Never give out personal information or send money unless you verify the company"s or solicitor"s legitimacy.
* If they offer to wire the “winnings” directly into your bank account,do not give them your bank account information.
* If you are told that you can "verify" the prize by calling a certain number,that number may be part of the scam. Instead of calling it,you should look up the name of the lottery or organization on your own to find out its real contact information.
* If you think someone on the phone is trying to scam you,hang up immediately. If you engage them in conversation,your name and contact information could end up on a list that’s shared with other scammers.

 When Arlene Widdifield of Chesapeake checked her Mega Millions ticket,she made a slight miscalculation.
“I thought,‘Oh good,I won two dollars,’” she later told Virginia Lottery officials.
Well,not quite. She actually won $250,000.
Ms. Widdifield matched the first five numbers in the March 19 Mega Millions drawing. The only number she missed was the Mega Ball number. She bought the ticket at Food Lion,717 South Battlefield Blvd. in Chesapeake.
The winning numbers for that drawing were 3-6-14-21-37,Mega Ball 35. She used Easy Pick and let the computer select her numbers at random.
The retired restaurant manager was one of five second-prize winners nationwide in that drawing,and the only one in Virginia. If she had matched one more number – the Mega Ball number – she would have won a jackpot estimated at $13 million.

 Shirley Cameron of Burke was sitting at her computer when she checked the winning numbers in the previous day’s Virginia Lottery Cash 5 drawing. It didn’t take her long to realize she’d matched all five numbers to win the game’s $100,000 top prize.
“I was shocked and excited,” she told Virginia Lottery officials as she claimed her prize.

That’s how David Clark described his feelings as he claimed the $100,000 top prize in the Virginia Lottery’s Cash 5 game.The Lorton man matched all five numbers in the March 30 Cash 5 night drawing.

 The top prize in the Virginia Lottery’s Cash 5 game is $100,000. Cathy Do won that prize four times in the same drawing – and then some!
The Chesapeake woman bought four tickets with the same five numbers,4-8-12-25-32. When those numbers were drawn in the March 27 Cash 5 night drawing,each of those four tickets won the top prize. She also bought some tickets with other numbers for that drawing,and they won an additional $505 for matching three and four numbers. Her total winnings for that one drawing came to $400,505.
“It’s like a daydream,” she told Virginia Lottery officials as she claimed her prize. “I was shocked. I can’t explain it.”

 Gary Steffanetta was driving with his family from their Babylon,New York,home to North Carolina for spring break. When they stopped at Loves Travel Stop in Ruther Glen,he spotted a Virginia Lottery game called Good Deal.
“We’ve got to get it!” he said. “Look at the name:Good Deal!”
Sure enough,the ticket turned out to be a $150,000 top prize winner.
They had to wait until the next day to claim the prize. “We couldn’t sleep the whole night,” he said.

 When Sarah Marmo scratched her Win It All Scratcher ticket from the Virginia Lottery,she could tell it was a winner,but she was shocked when she discovered how much she’d won. The Alexandria woman became the game’s fifth $200,000 top-prize winner.
She bought the winning ticket at Mike’s Q Mart,2266 Huntington Avenue in Alexandria.

 When Ashley Crilly of Lynchburg stopped for gas in Rustburg,she also bought a Black Gold Scratcher ticket from the Virginia Lottery. She scratched the ticket while she was still in the store,and realized she had just won the $150,000 top prize.

 Donna Mears of Bloxom was so surprised when she discovered she had matched all five numbers in the Virginia Lottery’s Cash 5 game,she had to call her daughter to double-check the numbers.

 Janie Kennedy of Jamaica,New York,visits Virginia three or four times a year,and often plays the Virginia Lottery during her visits.
“I usually try to pick up a ticket – just because,” she said.
During a recent trip she bought two plays for the March 18 Cash 5 night drawing,and they both matched all five numbers. Each ticket won the $100,000 top prize,to make her combined winnings $200,000.
She bought both tickets at the 7-Eleven at 6658 Richmond Road in Williamsburg. The winning numbers were 4-5-11-16-30. She selected the numbers on her ticket using family birthdays.

 Freida Bashay thought her boyfriend was playing an early April Fools Day joke on her when he said her Cash 5 ticket looked like a top prize-winner. But it was no joke. The Portsmouth woman matched all five numbers in the March 18 Cash 5 night drawing to win the $100,000 top prize.

 Staff Sergeants Nathan Sutherland and David Jenkins have played Powerball together for about the past year. For the March 23 Powerball drawing,with its estimated $320 million jackpot,they were joined for the first time by Sergeant First Class Robert Gallow.
One of their tickets matched the first five numbers,missing only the Powerball number,to win $1 million.
“We still can’t believe it!” Sgt. Sutherland said as the three presented the winning ticket to Virginia Lottery officials.
They bought the ticket at Tobacco Zone,5224 Oaklawn Blvd. in Hopewell. The winning numbers for that drawing were 17-29-31-52-53 and Powerball number 31. Sgt. Sutherland said they always play those same numbers,although they have no particular significance.
On March 26,they received their checks from Virginia Lottery Executive Director Paula Otto. The three split the $1 million prize,with each receiving $333,333 before taxes. The store received a $10,000 bonus from the Lottery for selling the winning ticket.

 Norma Chhaunkar of Leesburg thought she’d won $250,000 when she showed her Powerball ticket to her husband.
“She was gasping,” he said.
But she was wrong. The ticket wasn’t worth $250,000 – it was worth $1 million.
Ms. Chhaunker matched the first five numbers in the March 16 Powerball drawing. She bought the winning ticket at Sheetz,915 Edwards Ferry Road in Leesburg. She used Easy Pick and allowed the computer to randomly select the numbers on her ticket.
The winning numbers for that drawing were 3-7-21-44-53 and the Powerball number 16. This ticket matched the first five numbers and missed only the Powerball number.
“You only hit five,” her husband joked. “Why didn’t you hit six?”
Had the ticket matched that sixth number,it would have won an estimated $216 million jackpot.
On January 31,Ms. Chhaunkar received her check from Virginia Lottery officials at the Lottery’s Northern Virginia Customer Service Center in Woodbridge. Lottery officials also presented Sheetz with an oversized check representing the $10,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket.

 Ellis Johnson of Richmond was in New York when he received a $52,000 phone call. His brother called to tell him Mr. Johnson had a winning ticket in the Virginia Lottery’s Win for Life game.
His ticket matched five numbers plus the Free Ball in the March 9 drawing to win the $52,000 second prize. The winning numbers were 1-4-9-19-26-42,Free Ball 5. The winning ticket was bought at Cross Pointe BP,8211 Hull Street Road in Richmond.
Mr. Johnson said he drove the 500 miles back to Virginia so he could claim his prize as quickly as possible. He told Virginia Lottery officials he hopes to use his winnings to buy a car for his mother.
His ticket was one of three in Virginia to win $52,000 in the March 9 drawing. The other two tickets were bought in Madison Heights and Sandston.
Win for Life offers a top prize of $1,000 per week for the life of the winner. Drawings are held Wednesday and Saturday nights at 11:00.

 Saul Tejada was sitting in the passenger seat when he discovered he’d won $1 million. The Sterling man had stopped with a friend at the 7-Eleven at 4209 Annandale Road in Annandale to get something to drink. He also picked up a $120 Million Cash Blowout ticket from the Virginia Lottery.
“I just put it in my pocket and kept going,” he said. “I didn’t think about it.”
Later,as his friend drove,Mr. Tejada scratched the ticket and realized he’d won the top prize.

There was long line of customers,so he decided to take a moment and use the Virginia Lottery’s Lottery Express machine to kill some time. He bought a Win for Life ticket.  John Barber was more than just a little suspicious when his wife said their $150 Grand Scratcher ticket from the Virginia Lottery was a top prize-winner. They’d had a false alarm when they thought they had a winning ticket once before.
“Don’t do this to me again!” the Broadway man said.
But this time it really was the top prize. The ticket won $150,000.

Talk about a great streak of luck! Actress Melanie McQueen answered a casting call for a Virginia Lottery commercial in 1989. Her character for that commercial was named Lady Luck. In the 24 years that followed,Lady Luck became one of the most recognized characters in the Commonwealth,appearing in television ads,at events all over Virginia and in the cyber-age on Facebook and Twitter.

The Virginia Lottery is marking National Problem Gambling Awareness Week,March 3-9,2013,with the release of two new public service announcements (PSAs) for television and radio,encouraging responsible play.
The first PSA,titled “Play Responsibly,” promotes the Virginia Problem Gambling Helpline,which assists people who think they or loved ones may have a gambling problem.It emphasizes that a problem gambler can make a positive change by seeking help. The second PSA,titled “Play by the Rules,” reminds Virginians that it is against state law to buy or sell lottery tickets to anyone younger than 18. Both television and radio spots include English and Spanish versions,and will air across the Commonwealth.

 Danielle Sherred was running errands with her mom when they stopped at the Shell station located at 13890 Noblewood Plaza in Woodbridge. She bought two Big Winning Numbers tickets from the Virginia Lottery. They then discovered that one of the tickets was a $250,000 winner.

 Sharon Revell thought she had won $10,000 in the Virginia Lottery’s Jewel 7’s Scratcher game.
“I was dancing all through the house,” she later told Virginia Lottery officials.
But it got better.When she scratched the rest of the ticket,she realized she had won a lot more than $10,000.
“I started feeling ill,” she said. “I had to get my husband to finish scratching it.”

 When Dave Honeywell returned to Richmond International Airport from a business trip,he walked past the Virginia Lottery’s two Lottery Express machines in the atrium. Above them,he saw a banner proclaiming that a jackpot-winning ticket had been bought there. The Fredericksburg man smiled to himself and kept walking. The winning ticket was in his pocket.
Mr. Honeywell matched all six numbers in the February 6 Powerball drawing to win the $217 million jackpot. The winning numbers were 5-27-36-38-41 and Powerball number 12. He bought the ticket a few days earlier,as he was leaving on the business trip. He used Easy Pick,allowing the computer to randomly select the numbers on his ticket.
The next morning,as he prepared for a meeting in Denver,he checked the winning numbers on the Lottery’s website and immediately called his wife,Nancy. “I think my heart has started beating again,” he said.
“I thought he might be having a heart attack,” she later told Lottery officials.
On February 14,the Honeywells returned to the spot where the winning ticket was bought to receive their check from Virginia Lottery Executive Director Paula Otto. They had a choice of taking the full jackpot in 30 annual payments or a one-time cash option of $136.4 million before taxes. They chose the cash option.
“We’re delighted to present the second-largest prize ever awarded by the Virginia Lottery to Dave and Nancy Honeywell,” said Otto. “In addition to this great prize,sales of Powerball tickets in Virginia for the 12 drawings leading up to February 6 generated more than $4 million in profits for Virginia’s K-12 public schools.”

Dave and Nancy both work for the Department of Defense. He’s a computer scientist and she’s a project manager. Although he lives about halfway between Richmond and Washington,he said he prefers to use Richmond International Airport for his frequent business travel because of the ease and convenience.

 If Dwayne Lowry hadn’t needed to put air in the tire of his vehicle,he would not have bought that million-dollar Powerball ticket.
The Virginia Beach man stopped at Happy Shopper,209 South Mallory Street in Hampton and asked for a dollar’s worth of change for the air machine. He noticed a Powerball ticket near the terminal that had been printed,but no one had bought. So he decided to buy it.
You might call that a million-dollar decision. The ticket matched the first five numbers in the January 30 Powerball drawing to win $1 million.

 There was something different when Dana Ripley walked in to the Gas N’ Shop store at 401 Walnut Avenue SE in Roanoke. She noticed right away a new Virginia Lottery banner proclaiming that someone had won $52,000 in the store.
“Oh,you finally got your banner!” she said to the owner,who had told her she wished she’d have a big winner.

 Back in December,George Phillips of Norfolk walked into the Virginia Lottery’s Hampton Roads Customer Service Center with a ticket worth $100,000. About a month later,he did the same thing – and this time,he had two tickets:one worth $100,000 and another worth $50,000.

 Andre Raven was waiting in line to buy some Virginia Lottery tickets when another customer asked the clerk how to play Mega Millions. The clerk was busy,so Mr. Raven showed her how the game is played.

 You can help celebrate Virginia’s heroes of education by nominating a Super Teacher. The Virginia Lottery’s Super Teacher Awards honor outstanding Virginia public school teachers,and thanks them for their dedication and commitment to students and their families. This program recognizes teachers who go the extra mile each day and inspire others to do the same.
Since 2008,the Super Teacher program has honored 40 of Virginia’s finest teachers.This year,eight more teachers from across the state will join the ranks of Virginia Lottery Super Teachers. The Virginia Lottery,The Supply Room Companies and the Virginia PTA partner to present these awards during a surprise presentation at the winning teacher’s school. These presentations bring fun and excitement to the schools as students,colleagues,administrators and other local VIPs join together to honor the winning teacher.
How does it work? Anyone 18 or older can nominate a K-12 Virginia public school teacher by providing some basic contact information,answering a few questions and – new this year – submitting photos or a short video if they wish.

What’s the prize? Each Super Teacher receives a $2,000 cash prize from the Virginia Lottery,and a $2,000 classroom supply credit from The Supply Room Companies. This year,all eight Super Teacher schools will qualify for a second contest. One school will be chosen to win an additional $5,000 credit from The Supply Room Companies to purchase items for the entire school. The school will be selected through a Facebook contest.

 Every year,Weldon Garber of Harrisonburg joins two friends from Pennsylvania - Donna Sliver and Rick Snell - to buy three tickets in Virginia’s New Year’s Millionaire Raffle from the Virginia Lottery. Each of them kicks in $20 for the January 1 drawing.
This year,one of their tickets won $50,000.
Mr. Garber bought the winning ticket,#364094,at Dayton Mini Market,237 Main Street in Dayton.
He discovered he had a winning ticket a few mornings later when he took a break from fishing. He went to a nearby store. The store clerk confirmed that his ticket was worth $50,000.
“Now don’t be lying to me,” he later recalled saying to the clerk.
It was no lie. The ticket was one of four $50,000 winners in the drawing.
How did he celebrate the win? He went back fishing.
The other three $50,000 winners in the January 1 drawing were bought in Chester,Hampton and Glenns. Four tickets each won $1 million. Those tickets were bought in Springfield,Midlothian,Highland Springs and Broadway.

 Peter Armoo of Stafford has been holding onto a winning ticket for more than two months. On January 10,2013,he paid a visit to the Virginia Lottery to collect his prize.
Mr. Armoo matched the first five numbers in the November 6,2012 Mega Millions drawing with a ticket he bought at 7-Eleven at 7214 Beulah Street in Alexandria.
The winning numbers for that drawing were 3-5-13-32-35,Mega Ball 6. Though he says the numbers had no particular significance,he did select them himself.
Mr. Armoo was one of six second-prize winners nationwide in that drawing,and the only one in Virginia. If he had matched one more number – the Mega Ball number – he would have won a jackpot estimated at $12 million.

 Powerball is hot in Virginia! Within the past eight weeks,there have been eight $1 million-winning Powerball tickets in the Commonwealth. Today the eighth of those million-dollar winners claimed his prize.
Keith Copeland of Disputanta matched the first five numbers in the January 12 Powerball drawing. The only number he didn’t match was that final number,the Powerball number. The winning numbers were 10-14-21-23-47 and Powerball 7.
He bought his million-dollar-winning ticket at Salem Market,11420 South Crater Road in Petersburg. On January 15,he returned to the store to receive his check from Virginia Lottery Executive Director Paula Otto. The store received a $10,000 bonus from the Lottery for selling the winning ticket.

That’s how Michele McVee’s husband reacted when he saw her top-prize-winning ticket in Virginia’s New Year’s Millionaire Raffle. The ticket is one of four drawn in the New Year’s Day drawing to win the million-dollar top prize.
“It was surreal!” she said,when asked about the moment she realized she’d won.
The Burke woman bought the ticket at the 7-Eleven at 8319 Old Keene Mill Road in Springfield. On January 14,she returned to the store to receive her check from the Virginia Lottery. The store received a $10,000 bonus for selling the $1 million ticket.

She bought the winning ticket,#108164,on December 31,the last day of sales for the Raffle. A few hours after the drawing,she looked on the Lottery’s web site and realized she had a winning ticket.
“I went to my husband and told him to get up,” she recalled. He confirmed it was one of the four million-dollar winners. He later told Lottery officials that she didn’t say anything in reply – she just stared.

 Joshua Mayes of New Market was on his way home from a family dinner on Christmas Day. He stopped at the 7-Eleven at 10935 North Valley Pike in Broadway. While he was there,he bought a Virginia’s New Year’s Millionaire Raffle ticket from the Virginia Lottery. His ticket was #248216.
“I told my wife those numbers look good,” he later told Virginia Lottery officials.
He was right. That ticket was one of four $1 million winners in the January 1 drawing.
“I was jumping up and down yelling,” Mr. Mayes said. “I still don’t believe it.”

 Sara Kesterson was sitting in her car when she realized she’d won the $1 million prize in the Virginia Lottery’s Casino Royale Scratcher game.
“I had to look at it a hundred times before I believed it,” she later said.
The Staunton woman bought the winning ticket at Kangaroo Express,313 Springfield Lane in Staunton. She then took it out to her car in the parking lot to scratch it.
“It’s my favorite game!” she said.
On January 11,she returned to the store to receive her check from the Virginia Lottery.

She had a choice of taking the full $1 million prize in annual payments over 25 years or a one-time cash option of $575,000 before taxes. She chose the cash option.

 Jenny Thomas was only joking when she bought a 10x the Money ticket from the Virginia Lottery and said,“This is my winning ticket right here!”
But when she scratched it,she quickly saw that it really was a winning ticket – and it was worth $100,000.
“I was hysterical!” she told Lottery officials as she claimed her prize. “I was so happy.”

 Steven Henderson needed some change so he could put air in his car tires. That’s how he ended up in the Fast Food Mart at 4137 Indian River Road in Chesapeake. While he was there,he bought a $150 Grand Scratcher ticket from the Virginia Lottery. That ticket ended up winning the $150,000 top prize.
“I scratched it,and next thing you know,my heart starts beating!” he told Lottery officials as he claimed his prize.
Mr. Henderson,who works in commercial remodeling,said he has no immediate plans for his winnings.

 Janice Vick of Portsmouth was on her lunch break at work when she found out she’d won $250,000. Her co-workers got to share the excitement.
“Nobody could believe it,” she said. “It was just a great day!”
