Home >> Lotto South: How to Play

The final Lotto South drawing was held on Saturday, February 25, 2006. Win For Life replaced Lotto South, which the Lottery retired after a successful four-and-a-half year run.

  • Prizes for matching 3, 4, 5 or 6 numbers
  • All prizes are pari-mutuel (they will vary from draw to draw)
  • Cash Option or Annual Payout available for jackpot winners
  • Length of annual payout is 30 years

  • You win if you match 3, 4, 5 or 6 numbers in an official Virginia Lottery drawing for which you have a valid Lotto South ticket. All prizes are pari-mutuel.
  • Box at right shows prizes paid in all Lotto South drawings except the final drawing that occurred on February 25, 2006. Because nobody won the jackpot in that drawing, all other prizes in that drawing were increased. Click here for draw details.

Jackpot winners choose how they will accept the prize.

Cash Option: Take your share of the jackpot prize pool in one payment. The value of the payment depends on how much money is received when the U.S. Treasury Bonds are sold.

Annual Payout: Take your share of the advertised jackpot in 30 yearly payments - one guaranteed payment every year for 30 payments. (If a winner dies, his or her heirs will inherit these payments.) The jackpot prize pool is the amount of money available to the Virginia Lottery to invest in U.S. Treasury Bonds over a 30 - year period. The advertised jackpot is the estimated total amount of pre-tax winnings payable over 30 years.
